KS2 Fronted Adverbials Activity Bundle — Year 4 (Lower KS2)
If your class is just meeting fronted adverbials for the first time, or you need focused practice materials that go beyond a single worksheet, this bundle covers the objective in full — from identifying and using fronted adverbials through to the punctuation rule that consistently catches pupils out in SATs. All resources come with answer keys included.
What’s included:
- Fronted adverbials activity sheet — 3 differentiation levels (PDF)
- Fronted adverbials reading passage — 3 differentiation levels (PDF)
- ‘Punctuating fronted adverbials with a comma’ activity sheet (PDF)
- ‘Punctuating fronted adverbials with a comma’ reading passage (PDF)
- Fronted adverbials story (Ursula the Unicorn) — for contextualised reading and identification (PDF)
- Answer keys for all activities (PDF)
Curriculum alignment:
Meets the Year 3/4 statutory requirement in the National Curriculum for England: ‘Pupils should be taught to develop their understanding of he concepts set out in English Appendix 2 by using fronted adverbials’ (English Appendix 2, Lower KS2). The terminology fronted adverbial is introduced in Year 4 and this bundle targets that objective directly. Resources are also suitable for Year 5 and Year 6 consolidation or intervention.
Differentiation:
All main activities are provided at three levels so the bundle works across your whole class without additional preparation:
Fronted adverbials to show time and ‘ly’ adverbials to show how.
![]()
Above + fronted adverbials to show time, place and how.

Above + fronted adverbials to show how often and possibility.
How to use this resource:
Use the activity sheets as independent practice following lesson input, or set the reading passages as guided reading tasks with a grammar focus. The comma punctuation sheets work well as a targeted follow-up once pupils are confident identifying fronted adverbials — the comma rule is a common stumbling block and is worth teaching as a standalone objective. The Ursula the Unicorn story adds a low-stakes contextualised activity ideal for early in the teaching sequence.
